The following month, British Captain Augustus Harvey, in command of HMS Viper, arrived within the realm and battled with the Mi’kmaq. The next yr Crowne along with his son John but not his wife, Temple, and a bunch of settlers, came to Nova Scotia on the ship Satisfaction. The grant to Crowne and Temple had been made by Cromwell under the Commonwealth; now that Charles had ascended the throne, there were plenty of other claimants. Crowne and Temple divided the province between them in February 1658, with Crowne taking the western part, together with the fort of Pentagouet, now Castine, Maine, and constructing a trading publish at Negu, or Negu alias Cadascat, on the Penobscot River. After d’Aulnay died in 1650, La Tour re-established himself in Acadia. 19 In response to the assault, D’Aulnay sailed out of Port Royal to determine a five-month blockade of La Tour’s fort at Saint John, which La Tour ultimately defeated in 1643. La Tour attacked d’Aulnay again at Port Royal in 1643. d’Aulnay and Port Royal finally won the conflict in opposition to La Tour with the 1645 siege of Saint John. The province also produced a notable nineteenth-century feminine mariner, Bessie Hall, from Annapolis Royal. The colony, whose capital, Charles Fort, was situated near the moment’s city of Annapolis Royal, lasted only till 1623, when the attempted settlement was abandoned, leaving the area to the French.
